After nearly two decades on Fifth Avenue, Galaxy Comics officially closed its Bay Ridge location on March 1,2026 – bringing an end to a shop that many locals came to see as a small but meaningful part of the neighborhood’s culture.
The store, located at 6823 Fifth Avenue near the Alpine Cinema, has been a familiar stop for comic book readers, collectors, and curious kids since it opened in 2007.
For those you remember, Galaxy Comics took over the space owned by Mutant Mania 3 and quickly built a following among Bay Ridge residents. For decades it served as a neighborhood hangout for fans of graphic novels, collectibles, and pop culture. Its location near the Alpine made it a natural stop before or after catching the latest superhero movie, and it became a place where longtime collectors and younger fans could browse side by side.
Unfortunately, like many small specialty shops, the store faced a difficult retail environment in recent years. Changes in shopping habits, the growth of online sales, and the broader challenges that hit small businesses during and after the pandemic all played a role in its closing. Employees have said declining walk-in traffic made it increasingly difficult to sustain the Bay Ridge storefront.
But just like when superheroes when they meet their demise on film or on the pages of comics, this is not entirely the end for Galaxy Comics. The shop will continue operating its Park Slope location, and the owners have encouraged Bay Ridge customers to visit that shop going forward. In the weeks leading up to the closure, the Fifth Avenue store had been running sales on graphic novels and collectibles as a final send-off to longtime customers. For Bay Ridge, this closing marks another end of an era – with many locals reflecting on the memories tied to the store and wondering what kind of business might eventually take its place along Fifth Avenue. As of this writing, nothing has been publicly confirmed to take over the storefront – but stay tuned to the pod for the latest info!
